Stargazers in New Jersey may be in for a rare cosmic treat Tuesday night: a beautiful glimpse on the aurora borealis.

Caused by a minor geomagnetic storm currently affecting the Earth, the colorful display may be seen tonight on northern horizon as far south on the east coast as Annapolis, according to the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

The university says the auroral activity will be high overnight, weather permitting, with the celestial lights visible overhead in parts of upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

Forecasters say the geomagnetic storm could get stronger over the 24 hours, pushing the aurora as far south as Illinois, according to the Space Weather Prediction Center.

While, it may not be as prominent in the skies in New Jersey, it may be worth a shot to drive to dark area, the farther north the better, as clear skies are in the forecast for this evening.

For the best chance to catch the event, Accuweather suggests traveling to a spot away from cities or towns with a clear view of the northern horizon. To capture on camera, use an exposure of 10 to 30 seconds.

The northern lights were last visible over New Jersey in March.

The runner-up prize for stargazers tonight is the Taurids meteor shower if the aurora borealis is a bust. The ongoing meteor shower generally peaks in mid November but a few meteors will likely be visible.
