Max Contract for Anthony....Boos in First Game as Team is down by 35

Does the appearance that you are doing something worth all the money the Knicks gave Anthony? JR Smith said that the Knicks quit in the game and it was the first one in the season. This is akin to giving a player like Tom Chambers, or JR Riders the key to the Ferrari and saying go Drive!

There is no way that they could not find three or four mid contract players or lower that could each do a single skill somewhat well....a spot up three shooter, a guard that hits a mid ranger jumper, and two people that just play hard and rebound...

The worst cancer I have seen from a player that did no go nuclear in society (bodies in trunk, multiple DUI types) is Carmello. He does not do much embarassing in his personal life but New York should ask for a refund

Knicks are hamstrung by salaries atm. IMO melo is one of the few worth the max but Bargnani/Stoudemire are killing any depth they could have with those bloated contracts...also JR Smith to an extent but he is unmovable. Knicks will be better with Calderon running the point but he's only back in 2-3 weeks so tough times ahead all season long for the knicks.

He is definitely a max contract player. If guys like Klay thompson and gordon hayward can possibly get max contracts, or Joe Johnson then Melo sure as hell deserves the money he gets. He is as talented of a scorer as pretty much anybody in the league (besides maybe durant/lbj). Now, i dont really like his style of play and he is too much like Kobe for my preference but I cant deny his incredible talent and production

The Knicks are just a bad basketball team. They have nothing outside of Melo and Melo isnt the type of player that will make his teammates better like Lebron or even a Chris paul. Melo is what he is. He can be the best player on a championship team but he will need the right pieces alongside him. The Knicks were a pathetic team last year and they lost their second best player (Chandler). Best case is likely a 7/8 seed in the playoffs and a first round exit

If they were going to let go of Melo it would have been retarded to sign Phil jackson and give him all that money just to look over a team rebuilding from square one. You lose Melo from the Knicks and they have to try building like the Sixers, tanking for top guys and then have them develop together for a winner 5 years down the road. It doesn't take Phil jackson to draft the top prospect in the draft for a few years so theyd be paying him 12 m a year to do nothing

They get rid of Amares contract next year i believe which is huge. Also bargnani and a few others so money will be available. Then they need to attract another star or two to play with Melo.

Best case scenario is likely Aldridge and Rondo if they can make that work. Or Rondo and Kawhi Leonard and then they maybe have something but it will take hitting the lottery with something like that for them to be contenders. And nobody even considers coming to NY without Melo being there. Guys are rushing to play with JR smith and Shumpert

I disagree with the comment that no free agents would go there without Carmello....

with the NBA more than any other league, free agent destinations are based on two things...the first is championship potential (Carmello is a second piece not a mantle piece) and the second is the night life/lifestyle that went with it.

Now Melo says that he stayed in NY partly because his family was so entrenched there..could be BS to deflect all the dollars he gets but for a lot of other NBA players it lets them live a lot better than Utah, Minnesota, Detroit, and probably 3/4 of the rest of the league cities. Texas, California, Florida, and New York...with even money players go there over any other place unless LeBron is there.

My two cents :)

I dont disagree with any of that. And honestly i have a hard time believing Melo stayed for anything other than money (and I dont blame him or any other athlete for going wherever pays them the most)

But nobody is leaving their team to sign with the Knicks as a big star if there is no established pieces in place. CP3 went to big market LA, but only because they had Blake already. Lakers are a huge name franchise in beautiful LA but cant get any big FA to save their life because they know Lakers are way off from being a contender (and also nobody wants to play with aging Kobe).

Being a big market is step 1 but also need a star to attract guys in. Boston had Pierce when KG and Allen came, Miami had Wade, LAC had Blake, Houston had Harden to bring in Howard, etc
