It has a row of discs that slice a hole in the ground. A see is dropped into that hole, then a rubber wheel comes along and pushes the dirt back into the slit cut by the disc and covers the seed. It's used for what is called "no till" planting. Which is when you don't plow up the soil and prep it for planting. You simply "drill" the seed into the ground that has sat all winter. One of the reasons getting disability insurance for farmers is rated so high. Other than commercial fisherman or logger its about as dangerous occupation as there is.
