Stupid Question about QB's running the ball...

If a QB has space and starts running the ball... why does he then slide when defenders start to get close?

During that last play just now, Dalton started running the ball (got about 15 yards) and then slid because defenders were on the horizon. But, if he had kept running, he could've gained at least ten more yards before being tackled.

Is it simply risk of injury or are QBs just big pussies?

I think it is a risk of injuries. Some QB's are told in no uncertain terms to slide to avoid injury by both coaches and even GM's of most teams. Your QB gets hurt and it could cost the team dearly including coaches getting fired if they are on the hot seat and the season goes up in smoke because they don't have a good backup. Used to love watching Steve McNair run on the Titans. McNair played with broke fingers, cracked ribs, shoulder, etc. never seen a tougher warrior at QB. However since he left the talent at QB here has sucked. VY and Locker both soured me dearly on mobile QB's. The pendelum has swung back to pocket QB's here finally and even though i don't like Whisenhunt's coaching i do like the fact that he prefers traditional QB's. If he can avoid the injury bug and gets a decent offensive line i think Mettenberger has a good chance to be the long term answer at QB here in TN. Mett played very well at times but couldn't do much with a team lacking talent and a defense that gave up thirty points a game.

During the regular season I can understand sliding and not taking any hits. But in the playoffs, especially when you are losing you have to take it to the next level.

You won't ever make a name for yourself losing in the first round year after year.

Sliding is smart most of the time, but the playoffs are different, you have to put everything you have into every play, the pussy dalton was not even gonna take a hard hit those couple times he ran, a safty or corner were the only guys nearby, it's a little different if it's a lineman or linebacker.
