Pro basketball betting doesn’t have to stop once the 2017 NBA Finals come and go this summer. More professional basketball will be on its way when Ice Cube’s Big 3 Championship arrives on June 25th.

Cube has teamed up with Allen Iverson, Jason Williams and a litany of former pro stars to form a brand new basketball league, specializing in one of the most entertainment forms of basketball – half court three-on-three competition.

The league begins it’s inaugural season with week one going down at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The festivities are said to be packing the feeling of the NBA All-Star weekend into one-day events, stretching across the entire summer. Week two picks back up in Charlotte at the Spectrum Center, while this 10-week tour with some of the NBA’s greatest players of yesteryear includes stops at massive venues such as Wells Fargo Center, Staples Center and T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

While this new basketball league should be tons of fun on the surface, it also offers up a chance for pro basketball bettors to make some coin if they do some research. Individual game betting might be available at certain basketball betting sites in the future, but for now fans can lay down some cash at BetOnline as to which Big 3 team they think can win the league’s first title.

Let’s check out the latest Big 3 odds and break down each team:

Big 3 Championship Odds

3’s Company – Allen Iverson (+450)

Killer 3s – Chauncey Billups (+450)

Tri-State – Jermaine O’Neal (+500)

3 Headed Monsters – Rashard Lewis (+600)

Trilogy – Kenyon Martin (+700)

Ball Hogs – Brian Scalabrine (+800)

Ghost Ballers – Mike Bibby (+800)

Power – Corey Maggette (+800)

Allen Iverson and Chauncey Billups are arguably the two biggest names of the modern NBA era and they understandably lead the top two teams that are favored by most basketball betting sites. Does that mean they’ll actually win this entire league in their first try? Not necessarily. Let’s take a quick look at every single team to see if there is some value amongst these 8 squads.

3’s Company

Allen Iverson leads the way for 3’s Company, as the former Sixers superstar looks to get back into the basketball limelight and show he can still ball at age 41. The Answer is older now, but he’ll still be quicker than a lot of the guys he’s facing and will surely shoulder a huge scoring load for his team.

Iverson was not a great three ball guy (31%) in the NBA, but that probably means less in a faster paced setting where he’s going to see a ton of volume. Iverson won’t be the problem for his team, however. Instead, he may feel the weight of doing too much offensively with very little help behind him on the roster.

Still, he does have a solid second scorer in DerMarr Johnson, who has the length and outside shot to be an asset on this team. Andrew Owens, Michael Sweetney and Ruben Patterson round out the rest of 3’s Company, but none of these guys pop off the page.

At first glance, Iverson’s team could have the scoring to be a threat, but they might not have enough size down low or reliable outside shooting to go the distance.

Killer 3s

Chauncey Billups captains the Killer 3s, who also have versatile wing Stephen Jackson as a very solid go-to scorer on the outside, as well as Brian Cook, Reggie Evans, Larry Hughes and player/coach Charles Oakley.

Billups isn’t the player he once was due to injuries but he can still run an offense, defend and knock down the long ball. He’s going to get a ton of help from a veteran squad, as Jackson gives him a solid scorer on the perimeter, Cook is a useful big that can rebound and hit open jumpers, Evans is a monster on the glass, Oakley as a physical presence no matter where he’s stationed and Hughes has always been known for a solid outside jumper and the ability to rack up buckets as a scorer in general.

This team is way more complete than Iverson’s, as it has three viable scoring guards and three different big men that can defend and rebound. While no lock to win it all, this is without a doubt one of the more seasoned and balanced Big 3 teams as we head into the first season of the league.

Tri-State

Jermaine O’Neal heads Tri-State, which has an eclectic roster with Bonzi Wells, Xavier Silas, Lee Nailon, Mike James and legendary player Julius “Dr. J” Erving (coach) hitting the hardwood.

The initial focus will be on the size and toughness this team can get out of O’Neal, who should still be able to score in this kind of setting, while also hit the glass hard.

Mike James gives this team a solid presence at the point, too, while Bonzi Wells was at one time a very solid scorer in the NBA. That three-man grouping could be a dangerous team in this league, but it’s fair to question the depth and balance on this roster.

O’Neal can easily end up dominating some of these games and Bonzi Wells could be a dangerous scorer still, but who else are we to fear on Tri-State? The lack of high level scorers and overall depth probably keeps them from being a sexy bet to win it all.

3 Headed Monsters

Rashard Lewis captains the 3 Headed Monsters, who have pieced together a very interesting team including coach Gary Payton and players, Jason Williams, Kwame Brown, Eddie Basden and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf.

This might be the most underrated team going into the Big 3 league. Jason Williams has been seen ripping up amateur leagues recently, so we know he still has moves, can run an offense and can hit the outside shot. He’ll be a real threat, while Rashard Lewis can help on the glass and has always been known for a silky smooth outside jumper.

The 3 Headed Monsters certainly have some ammunition on the outside, while Brown can bang down low and Abdul-Rauf gives us yet another scoring guard who can effectively connect from long range.

This squad lacks reliable size with Brown being their only big who is tough down low, especially with Lewis being more of a perimeter-oriented player. How Lewis handles some of the tougher bigs down low in this league – of if he can get them in trouble by spacing the floor – will tell us just how good this team is.

Size issues aside, this is a very dangerous team and is easily one of the top sleeper picks when we look at the Big 3 Championship odds.

Trilogy

Kenyon Martin leads Trilogy, which also features Al Harrington, Rashad McCants, James White and Dion Glover, with Rick Mahorn calling the shots as head coach.

Martin should be a stable presence down low as a guy who can score, defend, rebound and block shots. He should get some help from effective scorer Al Harrington, who at 37 can still score the ball from anywhere on the floor, including from long distance.

McCants could also chime in as a quality guard from the outside. He never really made it big in the NBA after starring at North Carolina, but the 32-year old has always been able to score and hits the three ball consistently.

Like some of the other teams in this league, Trilogy could suffer from a lack of depth. They look to be quite top-heavy and may not have a true point guard to help run their offense. They’ll be able to hang with a lot of teams due to Martin’s presence down low and some solid outside shooters, but picking them to win it all feels like a reach.

Ghost Ballers

Mike Bibby leads the Ghost Ballers, as the former Kings and Grizzlies star hopes to team up with Ricky Davis to form one of the most explosive outside-shooting teams in the Big 3 league. They will probably have to carry much of the load, too, seeing as the rest of their roster consists of middling talent such as Marcus Banks, Ivan Johnson and Mo Evans.

Bibby flamed out of the NBA but can still provide a solid outside jumper and should be able to set his teammates up in this league. Davis might end up being this team’s go-to scoring threat, and at 37 he should be able to live up to that role in this setting.

The big problem is the Ghost Ballers don’t have much else to get excited about. Banks can create for himself and others and can hit the outside shot, but nobody else here produces much excitement. In addition, this looks to be one of the smaller teams in this league and the inside presences won’t be too troubling.

Bibby and Davis could be fun to watch, but they don’t look like a legit threat to ball their way to the title.

Ball Hogs

Brian Scalabrine of all people captains the Ball Hogs, which is odd because he’s simply not very good at basketball. Scal can shoot a little bit and was always a pesky player in the league, but it’s tough to see him carrying this team very far.

The hope for the Ball Hogs will have to be that the scoring responsibility lies elsewhere. Josh Childress has the scoring aptitude to accept that challenge, while Derrick Byars, Rasual Butler and Dominic McGuire fill out a surprisingly versatile roster.

This might be one of the more balanced and versatile rosters, but it’s also the one lacking in star power the most. Maybe Scalabrine will shock us or these old versatile veterans will pool their efforts together. Heck, maybe head coach Rick Barry will work some magic and lead this team all the way. We just wouldn’t bet on it.

Power

The last team to consider is Power, which infamous muscle man Corey Maggette captains. Maggette has always been known as a very effective scorer and at age 37 is probably going to be one of the more impressive talents in the Big 3 league. He should still be able to score at a high level and can also chip in a pretty reliable outside jumper.

Maggette gets to team up with former Clippers teammate Cuttino Mobley, which could be a ton of fun to watch. Mobley has always been known as a very effective scorer, himself, and is an elite outside shooter. These two guys alone are going to give opposing defenses serious fits, as Maggette knows how to score and draw fouls. His inside/outside game will set things up nicely for himself and Mobley and this two-man game alone makes Power a very sneaky sleeper.

This team has some really nice guard depth, too, with DeShawn Stevenson providing solid two-way ability, Jerome Williams giving this squad a solid body for the paint and Moochie Norris rounding the roster out.

You could certainly say Power lacks enough size to make a real go at the tourney, but I’m not sure any other team has more impressive guard play across the board. Tied for the worst Big 3 title odds, we need to give Power a good, hard look when we lay down bets at BetOnline.

Interesting Rules

After we look at each team, we also need to consider some interesting Big 3 rules. The two that stand out the most are no foul outs, meaning players can foul as much as they like. These fouls still count against the team and can be problematic (after 5 fouls, fouled team gets 2 shots and ball back), but they could give volatile players like Charles Oakley and others a bit of a break.

The other creative rule is the 4-point shot. Any player touching any part of the 4-point logo on the court can make a three-pointer that counts as four points. In the event teams fall behind, this shot could become quite useful for teams with elite outside shooters, while the rule of a team needing to win by four points could demand this shot to come into play late in tight games.

We can’t really bet differently based solely on these rules, but they make for a very interesting game style and we can try to factor it in slightly when we’re looking at the teams we already like.

Who Will Win the Big 3 Championship?

If you ever watch 3 on 3 tournaments, you know the winners almost always win because they can hit shots from outside. Teams that can space the floor and hit consistently from long range get an edge in this league, while the best 3 on 3 rosters also have one really effective big man. He doesn’t necessarily need to be an elite presence offensively, but if he can rebound, block shots and defend, he’ll give his team a big boost.

The team that has the best combination of outside shooting and inside presence looks to be Killer 3s. Chauncey Billups is a smooth veteran that can lead this team on the court, defend and knock down open shots. He also has some good shooters around him and two useful bigs that can effectively bang down low.

No other team has the high level balance that this squad has and ultimately that should prove to be a huge difference-maker. They’re right up there with Allen Iverson’s team, but at +450 you still have a lot of upside, depending on how much cash you lay down. I’d be up for two bets going into the Big 3 league, however; a bet on Killer 3s winning it all, as well as a flier bet on Power. These are our two favorites teams just by looking at these rosters and we wouldn’t be shocked at all if one of them took home this league’s first championship.
