Should Klay Thompson have an asterisk next to his record?

Gervin does make a very legitimate point

IDK about an asterisk but I do think there should be two separate records. This isn't simply an era change where defenses are different (Defense much better now) but it is a drastic scoring change. If we were still playing by those scoring rules Klay would have only scored 28 points, falling a good bit short of the record

Klay's feat is much more impressive imo given the 100% shooting, 9 threes, difficulty of the shots and it came in a close game (Gervins came in like a 153-132 type of game where the whole point of the game was to get Gervin the scoring title), but that doesn't change the fact that they were playing by diff rules and therefore should have different records

technically the three pt line ruined the game. guys use to always work for the high percentage shot like pisol pete. now u got big men dribbling the ball up the floor and pulling up for threes

No way game is much better with it

If you dont have a 3 point line all youd do is clog up the paint and never give up layups. Give them wide open outside shots all day since you only get 2 points for them.

The good teams still work for high percentage shots and teams are way better now at understanding how to use the 3 pt shot. The top teams will work for three pointers quite a bit (SA, ATL, Golden State). They understand you should be getting either layups or three point shots, but quality looks not forced.

the lane wont be clogged if the refs r calling 3 seconds and they even now should adopt the larger key used in international games

To be fair to Gervin it didn't sound like he was being a bitter old man or anything when you hear the whole quote. He talks very, very highly of Klay and said how incredible his performance was

I don't even know if he actually even said there should be an asterisk or not (he may have). All he was saying was he didn't think Klay beat HIS record, he thinks Klay set his own. They are different records in his mind due to the scoring difference and his point is absolutely spot on. Like i said before Klay would have only scored 28 points going by the rules Gervin played by.

Would be like if the NFL started awarding teams 10 points instead of 6 for touchdowns of 50+ yards. Scoring records will get broken but they wouldn't be competing on the same playing field (vs teams of past years who hold the records).

But when you think of an asterisk next to a record, you think of Barry Bonds for cheating. Klay did nothing wrong. Rules of the game change. Gervin's record got broken...so be it.

Another example would be.....Now that the NFL is more of a passing league than it was in the 80's, when Payton Manning broke one of Dan Marino's records, did Dan complain? No. He was actually at the game to shake Paytons hand.
