Thoughts on the school cop at Parkland

Had this discussion out at dinner last night with a guy who thinks it’s the right thing to do...

Insanity

Absolutely idiotic no matter your stance on guns.

Some old 70 year old hag w a pistol and 3 hours of fun training vs some kid w an AK should go well.

Or when a kid accidentally gets shot by some overzealous teacher.

Or a kid steals the teachers gun

Etc etc etc

Or the cops show up and think an armed teacher is one of the shooters and the cops kill the teacher.

Yeah, cops would never do that...

No one is suggesting forcing teachers to carry guns, it would be voluntary, if you have a big school with a 100 teachers, perhaps 5 or 8 of them might choose to be armed, maybe more, maybe less. It's not going to prevent a shooting either, but it might help prevent a shooter from going  from 10 victims to 50.

Where they would have teachers or ex-military walking around armed.

Teachers walking around armed is stupid.

Ex-military are already on guard at many schools.  Many schools have SRO's.  School Resource Officers.  These are many times police officers or part of a county sheriff's department.  Many are vets who went into law enforcement when they got out.

So yeah.  That aspect is already common in public schools. Especially in the low-socio economic areas.

Several teachers put themselves between the shooter and students, and died, the difference is the teachers cared about their kids, the cop obviously didn't. Yes Kinger, an armed teacher, who is in the middle of the fray, will fight back.

If a gunman can walk into a military base like Fort Hood with 100% of the populace 'highly trained" in firearms use, and still murder 13 people with a pistol, do you honestly think that 20% of teachers having a gun is going to stop the next killer who may have an AR-15?

And what if the armed teacher is black. How is the arriving SWAT team going to react to seeing that?

It's my understanding that despite Ft Hood taking place on a military base, no one near Hassan was armed, just people at the front gate along with base security, etc.

Let me make my viewpoint clear, arming teachers is not the solution, however it "might" help or possibly deter another attacker. There are many reasons for what happened, the obvious ones...inaction by police/fbi, school admin, etc, along with a whole host of other causes, including violent images/games, social media, school culture in america today(that seems to create very resentful students), possible bullying, failure of the mental health system...and...drumroll...possibly it's too easy for crazy people to buy guns.

Basically ignoring every possible cause except guns is insane, if your goal is really to prevent future attacks.
