NFL Franchises Best And Worst Periods During The Super Bowl Era 1967-2017

ARIZONA---From 2008 to 2015 the Cards had 5 winning seasons,4 postseason berths where they won five playoff games and went to two NFC Championships and one Super Bowl. They were 73-57 during this time with Bruce Arians HC for the bulk of it along with Steve Keim GM. From 1982 through 2007 a period where they made the postseason only twice was a hard time for many diehards. It was said that while Michael Bidwill is looked at as a good owner the same can't be said of his father Bill who was known to be very tight with finances.

ATLANTA---The Falcons most productive period has been 2008 through 2017 easily they had 7 winning seasons,6 postseason berths and 3 division titles where they won four playoff games and went to two NFC Championships and one Super Bowl. They were 95-65 during this time which is basically the entire time Matt Ryan has been QB. Their worst stretch was 1981-1994 during this time they went through five head coaches and had just two winning seasons one in strike year 1982 the other in 1991.

BALTIMORE---From 2006 through 2014 the Ravens had 7 winning seasons,7 postseason berths and 3 division titles where they won ten playoff games and went to three AFC Championships and won one Super Bowl. Ironically their worst period is now as from 2013 through 2017 the team has missed the postseason four out of the last five years.

BUFFALO---From 1988 through 1999 the Bills had a 12 year period where they were wildly popular and won lots of games, they had 10 winning seasons,10 postseason berths and 6 division titles where they won eleven playoff games and went to five AFC Championships and lost four Super Bowl. The worst period was recent from 2000 through 2016 a period of 17 years with just two winning seasons and no postseason berths.

CAROLINA---Their best period is recent 2013-2017 as they have made the postseason and had winning years in the past 4 out of 5 seasons. They have won three playoff games and lost a Super Bowl. Their worst period was from 2006 through 2012 where they had only one winning season of the past seven seasons.

CHICAGO---The Bears most successful period was 1984 through 1994 during this time they had 8 winning seasons,8 postseason berths where they won seven playoff games and went to three NFC Championships and won a Super Bowl. Their worst period is the last ten years 2007-2017 where they made the postseason just once in 2010.

CINCINNATI---Cincy's most successful period was from 2005 through 2015 during this ten years they had 7 winning seasons,7 postseason berths along with 4 division titles. Their worst period is 1991 through 2004 a period where they had 14 straight losing seasons.

CLEVELAND---The Browns most productive period was from 1980 through 1989 during this time they had 8 winning seasons,7 postseason berths and 3 postseason wins along with 5 division titles. Their worst period is 1990 through 2017 a period of 27 years where they had only 3 winning seasons and 2 postseason appearances.

DALLAS---Dallas most successful period was from 1965 through 1985 during this time they had 20 straight winning seasons,18 postseason berths along with 13 division titles. they won twenty playoff games and went to twelve NFC Championships and five Super Bowl winning two. Their worst period was 1984 through 1990 they had one winning season/postseason appearance.

DENVER---Denver most successful period was from 1983 through 1998 during this time they had 11 winning seasons,10 postseason berths along with 7 division titles. they won fourteen playoff games and went to six AFC Championships and five Super Bowl winning two.Their worst period was 1967 through 1976 they had one winning season and no postseason appearances.

DETROIT---Detroit most successful period was from 1991 through 2000 during this time they had 7 winning seasons,6 postseason berths along with 2 division titles and an NFC championship appearance,Their worst period 2001 through 2010 with no winning seasons or postseason appearances along with the worst record in the league during that span.

GREEN BAY---Green Bay most successful period was from 1993 through 2017 during this time they had 20 winning seasons,19 postseason berths along with 12 division titles. They won twenty one playoff games and went to seven NFC Championships and  three Super Bowls winning two.Their worst period 1970 through 1992 with only four winning seasons and two postseason appearances in twenty two years.

HOUSTON---most successful period was from 2011 through 2016 during this time they had 5 winning seasons,4 postseason berths along with 4 division titles. Their worst period 2002 through 2010 with one winning season and no postseason appearances in their first nine seasons.

INDIANAPOLIS-most successful period was from 1995 through 2014 a twenty year period mostly during the Manning/Luck eras during this time they had 16 winning seasons,16 postseason berths along with 10 division titles. They won fourteen playoff games and went to five AFC Championships and two Super Bowls winning one. They won 11 or more games during at least eleven seasons. Their worst period 1978 through 1994 they had just three winning seasons and one postseason appearance over a 17 year period.

JACKSONVILLE----Oddly the Jaguars -most successful period was from 1996 through 1999 the very beginning of the franchise under HC Tom Coughlin during this time they had 4 winning seasons,4 postseason berths along with 2 division titles. They won four playoff games and went to two AFC Championships and were 45-19 during this time one of the best teams during this stretch. Unfortunately after 1999 the team sputtered from 2000 through 2016 the team had only three winning seasons, two postseason berths over this 17 year period including a partucularly ugly stretch from 2008 through 2016 where the team suffered nine straight losing seasons the last six years of that streak they lost 11 or more games every year and were 22-74,All this finally ended when the team hired Tom Coughlin back to be CEO and in 2017 the team went 10-6 won the division and made it all the way to the AFC Championship.

KANSAS CITY---Kansas City most successful period was during the early part of the Super Bowl era from 1966 through 1971 during this time they had 6 winning seasons,4 postseason berths going to two Super Bowls winning one. The other period was during the 1990's under HC Marty Schottenheimer were the team had 8 winning seasons,7 postseason berths and won 3 division titles they won 11 or more games four different times and were 102-58 during the 1990's with only one losing season the whole decade. Their worst period period was 1970 through 1989 the whole 70's and 80's decades pretty much 20 year period where they only made the postseason twice. Kansas City and Green Bay while the most popular teams of the late 1960's early Super Bowl era both suffered greatly in the next two decades.

LA CHARGERS---The Chargers had two distinctive periods that were their most successful, first one was under OC Don Coryell and QB Dan Fouts. Fouts was the first NFL QB ever to throw for 4,000 yards and then was also the first to do it three straight seasons 1979-1981 during this time period the Chargers had 4 straight winning seasons, made the postseason 4 straight times going to back to back AFC Championships and winning three division titles. Coryell and Fouts Chargers were one of the first teams to lean heavily on the pass game during a time when most teams ran the ball. Another period was 2004 through 2009 the first five to six years of Phillip Rivers career were great for the team as he and the teams offense had the best RB in the NFL Ladanian Tomlinson. During this time they were a stellar 67-29 where they had 5 winning seasons,5 postseason berths winning 4 division titles making it to an AFC Championship.Their worst period was the entire 1970's decade where in 1979 they finally had a winning season and playoff berth to end the decade.

LA RAMS---Like the Chargers the Rams also had two distinctive periods that were their most successful, first one was from 1973 through 1989 during this time they had 14 winning seasons,14 postseason berths winning ten postseason games going to 7 NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl,They won 10 or more games twelve times during this span winning 162 games. The other was from 1999 to 2004 they called this the greatest show on turf era and they had 5 winning seasons and 5 postseason appearances going to 2 Super Bowls winning one under QB Kurt Warner. Just like they had two distinctive winning periods they had two bad losing periods. The first was the entire 1990's decade having 9 straight losing seasons with no postseason appearances from 1990 through 1998 next was 2005 through 2016 a 12 year span with no winning seasons or postseason appearances. From 2007 through 2009 they went 1-15,2-14 and 3-13 a three year stretch they went 6-42 overall winning only six times in forty eight games.

MIAMI---most successful period was from 1970 through 2001 during this time they had 25 winning seasons,21 postseason berths along with 13 division titles. They won twenty playoff games and went to 7 AFC Championships and 5 Super Bowl winning two. The bulk of that success was due to HC Don Shula from 1970 through 1995 and although a really good QB Dan Marino won lots of games but always fell short only making one Super Bowl a loss. Their worst period sadly is recently from 2002 through 2017 just two postseason berths both losses and five winning seasons the last 15 years. The last decade was tough from 2009 through 2017 they have just one postseason/winning season.

MINNESOTA---most successful period was from 1968 through 2000 during this time they had 24 winning seasons,23 postseason berths along with 16 division titles, went to 8 NFC Championships and 4 Super Bowl winning none. During this 32 year period the Vikings only had three head coaches. Whats really something is to this day the team has no really had a bad down period maybe 2001 through 2007 with just one postseason appearance which is the longest the team went between appearances.

NEW ENGLAND----most successful period was from 1994 through 2017 during this time they had 21 winning seasons,19 postseason berths along with 17 division titles. They won 30 playoff games and went to 13 AFC Championships and 9 Super Bowl winning five altogether. From 1987 through 1995 the Patriots had a bad stretch clinching just one postseason berth in nine years. In 1990 they were 1-15 then in 1992 only 2-14. Beginning of '90's were terrible for Patriots.

NEW ORLEANS- most successful period is the ongoing Drew Brees era from 2006 through 2017 during this time they had 6 winning seasons,6 postseason berths along with 4 division titles. went to 2 NFC Championships and 1 Super Bowl winning one. Their worst period 1967 through 1987 with no winning seasons and no postseason appearances in twenty years.

N.Y. GIANTS---most successful period are two distinctive eras. The first was from 1984 through 1990 the Bill Parcells era during this time they had 6 winning seasons,5 postseason berths along with 3 division titles as well as 8 postseason wins culminating in 2 Super Bowl wins. The second was from 2005 through 2011 the Tom Coughlin era during this time they had 5 winning seasons,5 postseason berths along with 3 division titles as well as 8 postseason wins culminating in 2 Super Bowl wins. Their worst period 1967 through 1983 with only 3 winning seasons and 1 postseason berth in a seventeen year period.

N.Y. JETS---Besides the early NFL years 1967-1969 when they had three winning seasons and two postseason berths that culminated in a win at Super Bowl 3 the other era where the Jets had the most success is bookended by conference championship appearances as 1998 through 2010 they had 9 winning seasons,7 postseason berths along with 2 division titles and went to 3 AFC Championships. Their worst period 1970 through 1980 with no winning seasons and no postseason appearances in ten years during the seventies decade.

OAKLAND---most successful period was from 1967 through 1985 during this time they had 18 winning seasons,15 postseason berths along with 12 division titles. they won nineteen playoff games and went to eleven AFC Championships and four Super Bowl winning three.Their worst period was 2003 through 2017. In the last 15 years they had one winning season and only made the postseason once in 2016.

PHILADELPHIA----most successful period was from 2000 through 2010 during this time they had 9 winning seasons,9 postseason berths along with 6 division titles, went to 5 NFC Championships and 1 Super Bowl winning none. Bill Bidwill was a cheap fuck, that's for sure.

Cards WILL win a Super Bowl before I die.  Let's get them back on track this season!

I think if Bradford can stay healthy he could be a good QB. Also think they draft a QB my gut tells me Lamar Jackson i've heard he has the potential to be a successful NFL QB.

Mike, you used to post this kind of stuff elsewhere, correct?

You're definitely familiar!

And these are always good reads, even if they aren't particularly useful to a certain game or event or forum drama related.

Still refreshing to read some different types of sports chatter/information.

Thanks,Was at EOG years ago.

Always interesting to see how teams once did....

Even though Green Bay has been great 1992 thru 2017 the last 25 years their was a period from 1970 all the way through 1990 20 straight years of mostly losing.

Although Indy had a great period from 1999 thru 2015......from 1978 thru 1994 they made the postseason once in 17 years.

I didn't pay much attention to Minnesota but the last 50 years they had one small period from 2001 thru 2007 where they had some losing other than that they have almost always had winning seasons.

Also didn't realize the past 25 years Washington hasn't done so well. Their first 25 years of the Super Bowl era they were a really good team.

Ever since Dan Marino retired in 2000 Miami has had trouble getting a good QB and winning regularly.

Teams with worst postseason drought are....Cleveland 2002....Tampa Bay 2007.....Chicago 2010....NY Jets 2010

Speaking of Tampa going back to the Mariota/Winston debate there are a couple key things sawying the argument toward Mariota being better so far. Among them.....Every season Mariota has led his team to a better record including last year a trip to the playoffs AND a playoff win where Mariota pulled off the biggest road comeback in postseason history coming back from 18 points down to win. Also last season Mariota led the NFL in come from behind wins with 5.  Meanwhile Winston team has not gotten better but worse.

Here awhile back on twitter i had a fan of a division rival team tell me that he didn't think Tennessee Titans were a winning franchise overall since they started back in '99. So what i did was see how all the teams did from '99 through 2018 basically the last 20 years And how Tennessee stacked up against the rest of the NFL and see if they won more than they lost overall and they were better than i thought. Tennessee were 4 wins from being in the top 10 in wins overall since they started in '99......Whole list here.....
