James Gandoflini, RIP, has since passed but at the end of the Sopranos, TONY DID NOT GET WHACKED.

We, the viewers, got whacked. The screen went black from our POV. It was never more complicated than that.

Yet all the great violaters of Occam's Razor refused to listen. Best example of the hysteria:

Chase has said many times that it is all there for us to see. This strongly suggests Tony’s death since there is essentially no reason to look at the final scene “really carefully†if Tony lived as he is clearly alive the last time we see him.

Members only guy must have got him from behind as he comes out of the bathroom. It's significant that Meadow was late or she would have been sitting on Tony's right.

Something significant had to happen at that instant. What are scenarios that end this scene with Tony alive??

Can AJ shoot members only guy or can a family member come in the door to scare members only guy off the attempt? If Chase says Tony is still alive does he mean "figuratively" ?

Chase is such a jerk. After all these years, he throws this at us?

Tony indeed died. If you go back a few episodes, when Bobby and him are out on the boat, Bobby is talking about death and says,

“You probably don’t even hear it when it happens, right?â€

We didn't hear it.

same thing I thought

why would he leave it ambiguous for years and then decide now this is how it ended

too late, buddy. Out of your hands, you can't make shit up years later.

from last year:

It has been six years since The Sopranos gave us the biggest WTF moment in TV history. But as various critics look back and define the show’s legacy, the anticlimactic ending does not ultimately ruin it. The characters are still permanently imprinted into our memories, and the struggle between loyalty and morality is still very, very apparent. Many of the actors have gone on and done other things, using their respective roles in The Sopranos as a catapult into other Hollywood ventures. And more importantly, the show firmly stamped HBO as the network that carries the hottest and best shows on TV with the highest quality in production.

With that being said, I can only imagine how Twitter would have reacted at the conclusion of the diner scene if it aired today. I am still upset that nothing happened, and the abrupt fade-to-black ending was just overkill and tacky.

Exactly.

He died.

I can't recall if Members Only guy is shown exiting the restroom....in seemingly unimportant blurry background but exit he did and he shot Tony dead.
