WVU
I think this is a step in the right direction. Amazon and Starbucks can bitch all they want but this is happening. We may see cities elsewhere doing this. A good answer to Trump's tax cut for big business.
Dingo
That’s good Lots of homeless in Seattle because it has mild weather just like hereIt’s a beautiful city
Jimmy Hoffa
Why should these companies be punished for their success while the homeless are rewarded for their poor decisions? Typical Seattle con job to spend other people's money. Seattle tried this same shit trying to shake down Boeing and then watched them move their headquarters to Chicago. Amazon should call the city's bluff and tell Seattle that they're moving their headquarters elsewhere. A public company's first duty is to increase shareholder value. Ironic that Starbucks is bitching about it when they spend 99% of their time virtue signaling about their public engagement...

Machiavelli
The game of the Haves v the Have Nots continues! It's just tough since cities need to generate revenue but also need to be more efficient. Where's the incentive to become more efficient when they fuck up? I think rather than adding new taxes, what needs to be done is to clean up the existing laws/codes so companies cannot so easily work around the system to avoid paying. Now...they are major employers and drivers of the economy so some carve-outs appear necessary but....cannot just go making up new taxes since they're upset that Trump gave them a tax cut either. Over-regulation and over-taxation had stifled the economy for the last few administrations, but especially the last eight. Just the promise of some relief spurted new growth. The actual implementation of this relief has sent our economy soaring.Things are so good, that the libs think they just have to spend some of this "other people's money" that is beginning to show up. They can't seem to understand that taxes and regulations have consequences. Hoffa right on here.
milwaukee mike
around the suburbs here it's becoming a situation where nobody has roots bigger employers like kohl's are bringing in workers from india or poland to work for $10-15/hour and live in so-called affordable housing... it never goes to who the politicians and media say it goes for (they trick people into thinking affordable housing is for people who've lived in seattle their whole lives and want to be near family while waiting on tables/sweeping floors/etc)

milwaukee mike
Damn. That's interesting. Did not realize that. it used to be call centers in india where people would answer the phone in broken, terrible accents now if you call kohl's hq here in the usa you get the same broken english sad thng is many of the current employees had to train their foreign replacements or they wouldn't get severance/benefits

So then businesses benefit both ways then. On one hand, the lower or no taxes benefits them but then on the other hand bringing in foreign workers to live in the affordable housing and work for less helps them, too. Seems both liberal and conservative policies take turns in helping out businesses depending on the situation, no?

Well, helping business helps the people that like to work for a living along with the people that have invested in the business.Business is not evil. People need a thriving economy to thrive. How many businesses have been driven away by progressive legislators? What good has that done for the little people that got left behind? These people that got left in the lurch can thank their Democratic voting.

Machiavelli
The point I am trying to make is sometimes Dem stuff can be a positive for businesses as well. They just approach it another way. Don't get me wrong--I have more conservative leanings, especially in business--but with Mike's post, it illustrates how Dems approach a favorable business climate, albeit at the expense of American workers, which is no bueno. They just go too far into that globalist approach..
Teddy kgb
Higher paying jobs and affordable housing OR give the CEO of Starbucks and Amazon a 200m bonus on top of their 25m a year salary... Why do you guys hate the poor so much and love the Montgomery Burns of the world? raising taxes on businesses doesn't create higher paying jobs, and even if it did, it creates less jobs would you rather live next to 10 montgomery burns or 10 poor people? nobody hates the poor, they just don't want stack and pack apartment complexes all over the place full of people that don't speak english and make everything more crowded... or tent cities full of bums

Why do you guys hate the poor so much and love the Montgomery Burns of the world? Higher paying jobs and affordable housing are fantastic things. But, we have over-taxed to the point of vanishing returns. The government actually makes more income by taxing less. It is not a question of tax or not to tax - we already tax. When we tax too much, we only hurt everybody.

Jimmy Hoffa
This issue isn't about Bezos or Amazon's billions. Amazon is a lot more than just Bezos, Amazon stock is held by many thousands of Americans in their pension portfolios and 401k plans. When Amazon is financially punished it hurts their shareholders a lot more than Bezos. Why should Amazon or Bezos' success be PUNISHED, and the bad decision making of the homeless be REWARDED? The more that is given to the homeless, the more homeless you get. These people aren't completely stupid, they are going to gravitate to where the best possible living conditions are. Ask San Francisco and Los Angeles...
