Machiavelli
How good would we be? Biting this topic from https://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1716753 But if LeBron, Durant, etc grew up loving Soccer and decided to play that instead of basketball, would we be in line for a World Cup? Thread about this took off last night. Us people with common sense, made the argument that the main reason the US is not a top contender in soccer is because the majority of the best athletes here play sports like football, basketball, and baseball instead. Which is 100% true. At least right now. There's an old saying in sports... "It's not about the X's and O's. It's about the Jimmy's and Joes." Our best athletes are playing other sports. If 90% of our best athletes were competing in soccer from a young age like many of these other countries, we would be competing for World Cup's regularly. KingRevolver
U.S. would be #1 in the world if Futbol was the #1 sport here. Not one doubt. We have the greatest pool of athletes here. White, Black, and Hispanic. The only problem is most go into the big money sports here in the States.

Guest ConspiracyMuncher
I think the point I read is that soccer is mainly marketed and promoted as a middle class / upper middle class sport... kinda, kinda like tennis is So arguably "the more hungry" athletes and minorities strive for NFL/NBA/MLB cause it makes you more money and there's far more chances to get a bigger scholarship, dont know how college soccer works but I think college soccer should grow to be nation wide if aint already is and also draft players from HS... I guess its already that way but not as high level, not even close... Once you guys figure to close that gap, better athletes will appear on the soccer field and you'll be a force to be reckoned with.... Ill give u an example, here in CR soccer is the biggest sport by MILES, followed by "Olympic" sports like athleticism, swimming, track, etc. Then surf (yes, we won the surf world cup 2 years ago or so and these dudes get good sponsorship)... boxing and theeeeeeeeeeeeen, some basketball. We dont even have football or baseball lol.

I’ll say it again that soccer is not a sport that you can pickup as a teenager and except good things to happen. It’s just not going to happen. Add you need continuous elite training way before teenage years.

I’ll say it again that soccer is not a sport that you can pickup as a teenager and except good things to happen. It’s just not going to happen. Add you need continuous elite training way before teenage years. Of course. But the piece you are missing... If soccer were the #1 sport in our country like other countries, our best athletes would be playing soccer. Thus they would be receiving elite training starting early in their youth. And if all of that were the case, soccer training in this country would be the most elite in the world. If soccer was the #1 sport, tons of money would be pumped into it. Because there would be a ton of money to be made off of it. The best training, the best athletes, the best everything. It would all tie together. TommyL
Was George Weah receiving world class training in Liberia before he left at age 22? And yet, he became one of the top players in the world. It’s not like every kid playing in the 32 countries in Tussia received elite training from birth. Does anyone really think that Panama finished ahead of us in the Hex because their academies are so much better than IMG or the MLS academies?
