Want to try the new Popeyes Chicken Sandwich in Gainesville? Schedule an hour or more in your day to wait in line for a bite of fried chicken.

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen’s sandwich released on Aug. 12, but a Twitter trend viralized the new menu item this week. Cars snaked through the parking lot and people lined up inside the restaurant at the only Gainesville location, ultimately causing a chicken shortage.

After Popeyes announced the sandwich on Twitter, users quickly compared the sandwich to that of Popeyes’ competitor, Chick-Fil-A, which has been the subject of boycotts because of its CEO’s personal and political views. Chick-Fil-A reacted on Twitter by saying “Bun + Chicken + Pickles = all the ❤️ for the original” on Aug. 19.

Popeyes then replied ”... y’all good?”, and the sandwich became an internet sensation as chicken sandwich fans began debating which sandwich is superior.

Tara West, the general manager, said the lines have been tough to keep up with and caused sellouts this week. This is not normal, she said.

Popeyes BY FAR The Best Fried Chicken I've ever had.   Only thing close is BoJangles.   Haven't tried the sandwich yet, but I suspect I'd love it.

I had Chick Fil A for the first time a few weeks ago.  One of their Deluxe sandwiches.  Was unbelievably disappointed.  Severely Overpriced, was barely lukewarm.  The waffle Fries were good though.

The launch of the first-ever fried chicken sandwich from Popeyes inspired a nation-wide fast food frenzy the likes of which we haven’t seen since the debut of KFC’s Double Down nearly a decade ago.

It all started in early August when Popeyes partnered with Sweet Dixie Kitchen, a Southern California restaurant that famously got busted selling the chain’s chicken during brunch, on an exclusive early launch of the new sandwich. The following week, this new dish — which is made with a fried chicken filet, sour pickles, and mayo on a brioche bun — was available at stores nationwide, and almost immediately fast-food fans started expressing their enthusiasm for the sandwich on Twitter. After a week of positive buzz, Popeyes’s rival, Chick-fil-A, tweeted a message attempting to claim ownership of the sandwich, which the Louisiana-themed chain instantly refuted.
