The current NFL collective bargaining agreement is set to expire after the 2020 season, but negotiations on a new one between the league and the NFL Players Association are ongoing.

Along with guidelines for compensation, player safety, and other notable issues, the NFL is working on changes to its schedule, including unexpected tweaks to the current postseason format.

Under the current proposal, which owners are “pushing for,” the playoff field would be expanded to seven teams from each conference, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. In addition to that, only one team from each conference would receive a first-round bye.

For those who are concerned that it would add too many 8-8 teams, here are the teams who would have qualified had this begun the first year that each conference had 16 teams, in 2002:

- Denver, 9-7; New Orleans, 9-7

- Miami, 10-6; Minnesota, 9-7

- Jacksonville, 9-7; New Orleans 8-8

- Kansas City 10-6; Minnesota 9-7

- Denver 9-7; Green Bay 8-8

- Cleveland 10-6; Minnesota 8-8

- New England 11-5; Tampa Bay 9-7

- Houston 9-7; Atlanta 9-7

- San Diego 9-7; NY Giants 10-6

- Tennessee 9-7; Chicago 8-8

- Pittsburgh, 8-8; Chicago 10-6

- Pittsburgh 8-8; Arizona 10-6

- Houston 9-7; Philadelphia 10-6

- NY Jets 10-6; Atlanta 8-8

- Tennessee 9-7; Tampa Bay 9-7

- Baltimore 9-7; Detroit 9-7

- Pittsburgh 9-6-1; Minnesota 8-7-1

- Pittsburgh 8-8; LA Rams 9-7
