My friend worked at Encore and Cosmo in Vegas. He would drive from here to Vegas 3-4 times a year. It was 16 hours from Mich/Indiana to Denver, then another 9 to Vegas.

I cant tell ya how many times ive done it. That drive thru iowa/Nebraska is just horrible. But leave after work at 5 and get to estes at 5/6am isnt bad and dont realize how miserable iowa/nebraska is when its dark and just cruise at 85/90

Went from northwoods wisconsin to Glacier couple years ago and left at like 2 am and was driving thru dakotas during daylight and it was horrible too. Drove 24 hours straight i think.

Ok start over.....In order of what we want to see and do

1. MT Rushmore

2. Niagara Falls

3. Any kind of BBQ

4. Casino

5. Any historic Lake

Way too much for one trip, if you want to do rushmore, from CA i'd recommend  going through Utah - lots of good national parks there, IMO the best is capital reef, although Zion, Bryce canyon, arches, canyonlands are all good and worth seeing, from there you can swing through CO and see the rockies, then north to the black hills and mt rushmore.

In the black hills, which is in western SD, the things to see are custer state park, which is right next to mt rushmore, also wind cave natl park(but covid means the tours might not be going), also many beautiful areas such as spearfish canyon, the crazy horse memorial(i was disappointed in it) and the deadwood area - which has plenty of casino's all within a walkable area(free drinks when gambling too). The whole black hills is roughly 60 miles long by 40 miles wide, so you can get a motel and hit several attractions in 1 day. the badlands are about an hr east of rapid city and is worth seeing. devils tower WY is not far from the black hills either(maybe 80 miles) and is another option.

on the way back you could even hit yellowstone and the tetons and swing back through idaho.

Triple A does EVERYTHING and they're fantastic.

Mt. Rushmore is fantastic.

But here's the reality, Mt.Rushmore is a 30-45 minute experience. And, it's practically all by itself with very, very little around it

Given your trip parameters, I would vacation elsewhere.

nope, see post 68, mt rushmore is fine, but it';s not the highlight IMO.
