I think some of those galaxies are from roughly 13 billion years ago - long before our star system even formed.

Are you aware that our sun is a 2nd generation star? it formed from the remnants of another star/stars that lived and died billions of years before our own. Every element on earth and in your body heavier than perhaps oxygen(dont remember exactly) formed in a dying star that went supernova.
